Looking for CA

Unread post by the-mailman » Tue Jan 10, 2023 11:40 pm

Anyone know where to buy foam safe CA? Last time I was at MSC they only carried Great Planes brand and it's terrible, even with an accelerator. Takes forever to harden and barely sticks. Parts separate easily even after 24 hours. Maritime Hobbies has almost no RC or building supplies either. Great Hobbies has none. I used to be able to get Hot Stuff and Zap brands.

I'd like to support local, but it's getting so hard to find what I need.

Hi Bruce,
My opinion on the best brand of C/A would be BSI...Bob Smith Industries ...next thing is to find a supplier. I think at one time I even saw Hobbyking selling the BSI brand. You may have to resort to having it shipped in.

Bob Smith is the secret code word! Search on that at Great Hobbies and you will find they have a lot of their products. The foam safe CA is called Super-Gold Odourless which is probably why you couldn't find it Bruce. They have both thin and medium and it is expensive at $25 for 1 Oz but that goes a long way as I'm sure you know.

Wow...and I thought the lettuce from California was expensive ...but I do like my salads!

I wonder if the Gorilla line of CA is any good ...probably no good for foam..!

Good reporting Rick, shows how you have to be specific when searching ..(garbage in results in garbage out, so they say)

A bit off topic but I am a huge fan of the Gorilla Clear non-foaming glue which is readily available at Canadian Tire. It is not fast setting like CA but it is incredibly strong. For my first test after I discovered it I glued the tips of two popsicle sticks together, clamped it with one of those giant paper clips and left it to fully cure for 12 hours. When I tried to take them apart I found that the popsicle sticks broke and the glue joint held!

Since then I have used this for almost everything including all types of foam, wood and also some plastics (doesn't work with ABS unfortunately) and even glass.

It sets in about 2 hours enough to be handled and fully cures in 12 so it isn't for rapid building like CA but the results may worth waiting for depending on the application.

Thanks, I'll expand my search and see what I can find.

If trying to glue foam, there are 2 products that I purchase from Great Hobbies that work very well

https://www.greathobbies.com/productinf ... id=DXMAD34

Ii is a foam to foam no to low toxicity adhesive. I use it for indoor EPP foamies and to secure other materials to foam.

The other is

https://www.greathobbies.com/productinf ... id=DXMAD21

This is a balsa coloured aliphatic glue that works great to secure foam to balsa or foam to other plastics. Most of my balsa construction is done with this.

I find the Deluxe Materials product line is a sleeper product. Once you try their products, you buy them over and over.

I also use the Gorrila Glue urethane adhesive. Search CTC for Gorilla glue, white 2 oz. The store SKU is 067-1090-0. I find you have to clamp and wipe off excess foam out with a damp paper towel. Once cured, indestructible.
