Contest Site Description

The contest site will be comprised of the areas/lines described below:

Combat Arena:
The Combat Arena shall be an area of limited width and depth to be
determined by the constraints of the flying facility and at the discretion of the Contest Director. The minimum width shall be 420 feet. The boundaries of the Combat Arena designate the only location where aircraft may engage in the act of combat. Once an aircraft leaves the Combat Arena, for any reason whatsoever, the act of combat by, or against, that aircraft must cease immediately.

Combat Engagement Line:
The Combat Engagement Line shall be a line immediately adjacent to the Combat Arena. Planes may not engage in combat behind this line under any circumstances. (See these rules for penalties to be imposed due to a violation of the Combat Engagement Line.)

Safety Line:
The Safety Line shall be a line no less than 25 feet behind the Combat Engagement Line. At no time during the contest may an aircraft be flown behind the Safety Line
except during the launch thereof. (See these rules for penalties to be imposed due to a violation of the Safety Line.)

Pilot Line:
The Pilot Line shall be a line no less than 15 feet behind the Safety Line. This
area is where the pilots will stand during combat. Pilots must remain behind the Pilot Line at all times, except when launching or retrieving a landed aircraft. Permission for anyone to move beyond the Pilot Line to retrieve a downed or landed aircraft before all aircraft have landed at the end of combat is at the sole discretion of the Line Marshall. (See these rules for penalties to be imposed due to a violation of the Pilot Line.)

Aircraft may be launched from between the Pilot Line and the Safety Line in a safe manner. A pilot or their helper may cross the Pilot Line for the express purpose of such launch.

Any landing, regardless of the reason, cannot be made any closer to the Pilot Line than the Safety Line. Any violation of the Safety Line on landing will incur the penalties designated for a Safety Line violation. No portion of the aircraft can be on or over the Safety Line. For this purpose the string and streamer(s) will not be considered part of the aircraft.

Spectator/Pit Line:
Only contestants and contest personnel wearing hardhats may enter the area in front of the Spectator/Pit Line during combat. There must be a minimum of 40 feet between the Pilot Line and Spectator/Pit Line.

Contest Procedures

Contest Structure. A contest will consist of a specified number of Rounds and a Final. The number of rounds will be determined on the day of the contest based on the number of entrants. The number of fliers per Round will be a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 5. The top fliers of each round will advance to the next round or the final. Flier ranking will be based on points accumulated in each round.

Contest Personnel. Contest personnel will consist of at least the following:

Contest Director (CD) – will be in charge of over-all contest organization and will rule on any disputes. The CD will be responsible for Round timing and for signalling of all calls (Launch, Start Combat, End Combat).

Judges – There will be one Judge for every flier in a Round. Judges will be contest fliers not competing in that particular round. Judges will keep a running score of points for their assigned flier. Judges may act as the flier’s assistant with respect to launching aircraft.

Duration/Combat. The combat period will be three and a half (3.5) minutes.
• The Contest Director (CD) will call “Launch” and all pilots will have 30 seconds to become airborne and prepare for combat. Once 30 sec has expired or all pilots have safely launched, whichever comes first, “Start Combat” will be called and the timing of the match will begin.
• The combat period and all combat scoring begins at the call to “Start Combat”. The combat period and any combat scoring will end after the call to end combat.

Restarts/re-launches. If a contestant's aircraft fails to launch on takeoff or must land any time during the Combat Period and is still airworthy, an unlimited number of restarts are allowed within the time between "Start Combat" and "End Combat" is called, provided the aircraft is down in an area that allows for its safe retrieval. A pilot will not be awarded “full flight points” if any land or restart is made.

Landing/Stand Down. Landings will begin after the phrase/signal to "End Combat" has been given. Aircraft will land in an area designated by the CD forward of the Pilot Line.

Change of Aircraft. During a round, no change of aircraft is allowed once the pilot has launched or attempted a launch. In between rounds, the contestants may freely choose from any aircraft available to them.


Continuous 3.5 minute flight: +200

Aircraft must be in the air at the time “End Combat” is called.

Launch On-time: +20

Aircraft launches within 30 sec launch window with an intact streamer. A pilot must have a full streamer to enter combat. If a pilot does not have a full streamer at the “Start Combat” call, he must land and attach a new streamer. He will forfeit full flight points if he must land and reattach.

Non-engagement (after one warning call): -25 per offense

Pilots will be given 1 verbal warning (without penalty) for not attempting to engage the opponent. Second offense and subsequent offenses will score -25 points. Non engagement shall be considered flying too high or too far from the combat area. Low level flying will not be considered non-engagement.

Streamer Cut: +100 per cut

Streamer Cut Scoring:
• A streamer cut is defined as any time one contestant's aircraft removes any part of a streamer attached to or being towed by another contestant’s aircraft between the announcement of “Start Combat” and “End Combat”.
• Cutting or removing any streamer being towed by another contestant's aircraft will be scored as a cut.
• A cut must be observed and confirmed by a judge to be eligible for scoring. The decision of the judge(s) regarding scoring of cuts is final.
• Multiple cuts on multiple streamers towed by a single aircraft in a single pass count as one cut.
• Streamers not being towed by a contestant's aircraft (i.e. floating unattached) are not eligible for scoring.

Scoring of Remaining Streamer:

Streamer length will be rounded down to the nearest foot when measuring remaining streamer. Each remaining foot of streamer has a value of four (4) points.

Mid-Air Collision:

Should two aircraft contact each other and one plane is rendered un-flyable, the remaining aircraft flying is scored with a 100 point kill if it completes that round.

Penalty for Crossing of Combat Engagement Line:

Verbal warning for first occurrence
25 points shall be deducted for each additional occurrence

Penalty for Crossing Safety Line:

100 points shall be deducted for first occurrence
100 points shall be deducted for second occurrence and pilot must land

Penalty for Crossing Pilot Line:

Loss of all positive points and pilot must land immediately

Dave, thanks for the offer, but I have judge's score sheets which detail the points values and make scoring fairly straight forward. I have a bunch of these already printed off.
