As for Opentx only Problem i have is trying to keep up on the Updates and the New ideas of mixes that ppl keep coming up with if you get a Jumper you want any Frsky receiver that does D16 mode ACCST or 90% spectrum receiver and some Futaba ones work but i think there is a list online I used a frsky Variometer in my Ranger EX alot when starting out as i didnt want to be going about the 500 feet a few years back with the audio to call out every 30sec how many feet i was at

Now with newer tech lets just say opentx is whats getting me out there like the videos you see on youtube (105106107 108 109110111112113114)

Well, SecretBuilder et. al., I have ordered a TX16S from Banggood; it should be here sometime around the end of January. It came to $186 shipped, with some random coupon code I found on reddit ("Toysho") bringing the price down by $21.00. For that price, it is worth the risk, I think, to have a new, hall-effect gimbal, 16 channel fully programmable multiprotocol transmitter.

Time will prove me right, or wrong. Hopefully you can all watch this transmitter control my Hollein Introduction F5J 2.9M sailplane on it's maiden flight sometime in early spring!

DoverSail,
I'm glad to hear that you have purchased it and think that it is worth it. I would be interested to know what it is like when it arrives. If I were to buy it it would probably be in the new year. Currently I use the FlySky FS-I6x which when I first started was the cheapest hobby grade radio that I could find with goods reviews and okay performance. I was thinking about upgrading because I felt that I was really being held back by the fact that I use a radio software/language that is not very common when I was looking at BNF/PNP planes/drones.

Hey Secretbuilder;
It should arrive in late January so I’ll definitely write a little review here. I have no experience with OpenTX but I do have experience with a variety of logical/programming languages so I am hoping that there will be some crossover there.

I've been using the Taranis since it came out about six or seven years ago, and am still baffled with the programming. I will only use it for my simpler models where it works very well. I would not dare use it on my Full House sailplanes as I'd be sure to screw up the programming. Any of the programming videos just leave me in a state of total confusion. However, I've watched a couple of programming videos on the TX16S and they appear to be more intuitive and simpler. (I use the Futaba9C for my full House models)
I look forward to you testing the TX16S as it may help me with either coming up to speed on the Taranis or considering getting a TX16S

I hope I will be able to make some sense of it, John!
Have you heard of OpenTx Companion?
It's a piece of computer software that lets you develop your OpenTX channel mapping etc and test it on the computer. When you're done, you can just upload it to your radio. That is what I am planning to test out as I wait for the transmitter, as you don't actually need a transmitter to play around with Companion.

Well, I've taken the bull by the horns and ordered up a new TX16s with hall effect gimbals. The radio is receiving rave reviews for its reliability and has a number of well presented videos on its programming. At about $200 Canadian, it offers a good alternative to the high priced ($1500 to $2000) so called good stuff on the market.

Do you know if the TX16S requires protected (longer) 18650 cells with the little circuit board in the end, or just standard ones?
I am either going to get the 18650s to fit in the included battery tray with internal charger, or order the 5000mAh 2S Li-Ion pack from greathobbies.
What's your 18650 situation Ivan?

In terms of a battery for the transmitter, I am looking at a version with an included 5000mah 2s lithium ion battery: https://www.snhobbies.com/product_info. ... s_id=12191
