George Jones tribute..

Unread post by retiredVTT » Sun May 05, 2013 6:05 pm

On Thursday of last week they held the funeral for George Jones at the Grand Ole Opry and opened it to the public with 4000 people attending.

It was a three hour service attended by several of country music's leading artists and also included former First Lady Laura Bush, who recalled putting a lot of quarters in the juke box in her teenage years, listening to songs made popular by George Jones.

There are young people today who will say..."George who", as after 81 years of life, which included four wifes, not too much was heard lately concerning George.

Back in 1980, while going through a rough spot in his life, where the bottle sort of took over, a couple of record producers got ole George into the studio to record a song that would change the rest of his life. With this three minute song, he went from $2,500. gigs to $25,000 gigs. After recording the song, "He stopped loving her today", George was heard to say..."who is hell will ever buy that morbid song..?" Well, the rest is history.

In later years he would credit Nancy, his fourth wife, with getting him straightened out and off the bottle; and indeed on April 26, 2013...He Stopped Loving Her Today.

Check out the many You Tube vids that capture the songs that led to #1 hits for George Jones over a period of four decades.

Even at age 70...he did a pretty decent job on his career changing song.
