Status of Flying Field

Unread post by paul.mckiel » Sat Jul 20, 2024 4:00 pm

Hello fellow fliers. It was / is a beautiful Saturday afternoon. I went up to our field this morning, and met up with Dennis and Roseline. They were already flying for a bit when I got there. They felt everything was in pretty good shape, and I agree 100%. Walked the runway, and it is no different then it was a couple weeks ago. It definetly could use a good rolling, as some ruts are still there, making takeoffs and landings a bit bumppy. But the field is 100% useable. My intent going up was to get out the tamper and try to do some minor repairs, but it was way too warm to be slamming a 40 pound weight around, epecially for me .

But the field is in good shape considering where we were last week. Murray joined us a bit later, and typical Murray had a boatload of planes. He Maidened a new full size Trojan ( 6 FT or better) perfectly, and Dennis maidened a new P51 Mustang , Roseline is taking off and landing like an old pro. I summed up enough courage to try flying my Ultimate 3D, and got thru 2 full circuits with no issues, but some fine tuning is still needed.

It was a fantastic day for flying, wish more of our people had showed up, but just letting everyone know SMAS is fully back in business.

No indications that Derek has been around, and I had a " pleasant " conversation with two young boys on our road with dirt bikes. I asked them if they could pass along to thier friends that its a fair amount of work keeping the field maintained, and they assured me it wasn't them and they would pass it along. We shall see.
