Canada150 Trail dedication day - Oct 26, 2017

Unread post by retiredVTT » Thu Oct 26, 2017 4:52 pm

Took in the festivities today as our flying field landlord, Canada Lands Company (CLC), cut the ribbon and dedicated the new Canada150 Trail that they have been working on for several months. The trail is roughly one kilometer in length and leads to a very nice lookout on the edge of the Halifax Harbour. The trail is located along the edge of the Shannon Park lands that will be redeveloped by CLC.
This re-development of the old Navy base takes time, and although it is difficult for the developers to give us an exact time table, it does appear that HEFA is probably going to be able to use the field for the year 2018. They will still only consider six month leases, however we can live with that.

Here are some pictures taken today.

Spoke to Canada Lands coordinator Chris Millier today and asked him what was the realistic expectation on the HEFA use of Shannon Park for flying. He thought that the fall of 2019 was the expected date for starting on our area. He did state that this timing was flexible and as a result we would be getting only short time lease extensions. It at least gives us some confidence that we are fine for 2018.
All in all it was a very positive turnout today, but they made no mention of any possible uses for the overall area.

For those who might be interested.... see the link for an approximate transition from the current configuration at Shannon to the newer proposed configuration.... it's rough but helps to get the idea across.

This is a video of the transition: https://youtu.be/LjAMMVPtMGQ

Have a look!

Wow, that's a lot of development. I'm surprised to see that it looks like even the school is losing their sports field.

If you look at the YouTube video - you will see the proposed differences.... new roads, new buildings, etc etc etc. Incredible amount of changes, really!

Canada 150 Trail and Lookout Opening for 2020

Warmer weather is upon us and this is the time of year we begin to prepare for the seasonal opening of the Canada 150 Trail and Lookout.

We’re pleased to inform you that we plan to open the trail to the public daily between the hours of 6:00 am and 9:00 pm. starting on June 1st and it will remain open through to October 31st.

In accordance with public health directives in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, we ask that you practice physical distancing when you visit the trail to keep yourself and others safe by doing the following:
Stay home if you feel sick or have been in contact with someone who is sick.Maintain a distance of least two metres between yourself and other visitors.Follow directives from the provincial government and local health authorities, including group size.Leave no trace. Take your garbage home to protect workers and keep the space clean.Wash your hands when you return home.

The health and safety of visitors are always our priority and we’re actively monitoring the situation. We look forward to welcoming you back to the Canada 150 Trail and Lookout.

Shannon Park Redevelopment

Like many of you, our teams are all working from home, and some are even trying their hand at homeschooling their children! As we continue to respect the provincial and municipal requirements and guidelines, our team is continuing its work on planning efforts for Shannon Park.

Following the adoption of HRM’s new Centre Plan, Canada Lands submitted a development application based on the 2016 Development Concept which calls for the construction of a new residential, mixed-use community on the property. The plan includes a variety of housing types, parks and open spaces as well as local commercial, employment and institutional uses. As the review and approval process moves forward, we will continue keep you updated.
