Christmas weekend

Unread post by the-mailman » Sun Dec 26, 2021 7:04 pm

Too windy yesterday, but I stopped by this morning and it was good. No one else showed up to fly while I was there, although John and Tyrone stopped for a chat. Will see what tomorrow brings.
MAAC: 19887

I never crash, I just create exciting ways to meet the ground. After all, take-offs are desirable, landings are inevitable.

Please let me know if anyone is seeking training tomorrow. Only limited space and the Apprentice takes up a lot of room!

** Edit: In hindsight, and especially with the latest health guidelines and suggestions to not share equipment and to maintain distances… better to hold off on training for the next little bit.

Well...Tuesday was AWESOME! Good to see a few people out and about at SP today. Temperatures started at -5°C and ended up closer to +3°C by noon. Lots of flying. Lots of smiles!

I know that Josh captured some video that he might be able to share. I had up my Mini and was able to *try* to follow Rhoady a bit while he was nailing touch and gos. The video is on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/HalifaxElectri ... 4497965585.

Colours are not great - at all - but hopefully the video helps to capture some of the activities of the day.... including those great touch and gos!

Tonight could see 1-3cm of snow; winds are supposed to be 7km/h gusting to 11km/h in the morning with "feels like" temperatures around -2°C. Could be suitable... TBD!

Video is on the cutting table, so stay tuned. If the weather is good tomorrow, I see no reason not to be there! :D

Chris H and I are at SP now. Light dusting of snow. Low winds. Small gathering... Josh, John O'S, Rhoady, Rick. Fun times with lots of distancing. These pictures were at the end of the morning.... Rick and Rhoady!

Tomorrow is looking good too.....!

Wow! What a great day for sailplanes.
It was completely overcast, so I didn’t think there’d be any hope of thermal activity at all. I launched my Introduction F5J up to about 60M to start, and grabbed a weak but consistent thermal close to the power lines on the right hand side of the field. I put the plane into “thermal mode” with the flaps down a bit, and slowly circled up and up, about 1M every 5s or so, and followed the thermal as it drifted toward the school.

Once I got close to the school (but not above it!) I put it back into cruise and went back to the power lines. Rinse and repeat three times and you’ve got a 17 minute flight, all under 100M!

After a short coffee break, I flew again, up to about 40M, and caught the thermals in the exact same place, this time managing an 11 minute session.
