Paved runway options

Unread post by MGC » Wed Jun 24, 2020 2:02 pm

Hi folks! I have a few planes I would like to try flying off a paved runway. With Shearwater runway closed, is there any place to fly off pavement that would fit our maac requirements? I have a 64mm EDF F-16 that wants to see the skies.
Thanks!

Bob has been keeping the grass in great shape BUT it seems to never be short enough for an EDF and mall wheels. Beaverbank is certainly an option and one of the only fields with a paved runway (other than SW). I have seen lots of options at SP including carpet runners, cardboard, catapults or hand launches. If the plane were <250g, it could be flown almost anywhere outside of MAAC requirements - but I am guessing that it is more than 250g?

Unfortunately our approvals do not extend to the pavement.... if only then that would be an easy option.

Thanks for the responses guys! Wow that is quite a runway looking at the video posted. Something I would be interested in checking out for sure. The Jet is the eflite 64mm f16, so over 250 grams and has itty bitty wheels. Hand launching it at shannon park is a good idea Brian. Do people with edf planes find it long enough for landing?

Shannon Park is fine for hand launching and belly landing a 64 mm EDF jet. A slight headwind will help with both. I find that with no wind my 70 mm BAe Hawk EDF comes in fast and sometimes ends up getting "arrested" by the tall bushes at the end of the runway. Having said all that given the choice I prefer to mount the fixed landing gear and watch it make a scale-like rotation and lift off from a paved runway like a full-size jet.

What battery are you using?

Its a 4s 2200. I agree about the landing gear. Seeing them roll out is part of the experience for sure! (Enter Top Gun theme song here) Hahaha
