Apprentice repair

Unread post by the-mailman » Tue Oct 27, 2020 3:51 pm

I really love my 3D printer.

While flying my Apprentice on Saturday the horizontal stabilizer tore free causing a hard crash. Broke the spinner, motor mount, cowling, battery compartment, and horizontal stabilizer. The fuselage was also cracked near the tail.

Thanks to Internet land I was able to find STL files for the spinner, motor mount and cowl. They turned out really good. Maybe a little heavier than the originals, but it shouldn't have that much of an effect.

I ran out of filament printing the cowling and the run out sensor didn't trigger to stop the print so I could replace it. I ended up just printing the missing remainder and using CA to join them together. I think it looks pretty good for less than $10 in material and a bit of time. If it gets broken again, I'll print the whole thing at once and it will look even better.

The fuselage and battery compartment was easily repaired with some CA and reinforced tape.

The elevator, rudder will have to be replaced. Hopefully MSC has a set. I'll drop by later this week.

Luckily, the firewall didn't break and the motor was OK. They would have been more troublesome to replace.

Be back in the air soon.

Wow! That's some very impressive repair work.
According to MSC, my horizontal stabilizer was damaged beyond repair after impacting "THE TREE". Nevertheless, if you think you can fix it, you're welcome to it.

Nice job Bruce ........you deserve a T shirt with a big "3D printer man" logo on it, or maybe "you break it, I'll print it..!"

I wonder if I could use that excuse with my spouse as a reason to purchase a 3D printer :D

Very nice job btw

Thanks Tim, but yours is done too. They do break easily. Keep the carbon rods and control horn for future repairs.

That was my approach. Steep learning curve though. Once you learn you can create almost anything you can thinks of. I print a couple things a week. Airplane repairs and things for the workshop and around the house.

Thanks, Bill, I'm still learning. I usually try to find someone else's design I can use or modify before I go all out and design my own.
