Pocket Rocket Duration model for Cox .01 TD

Unread post by JohnOSullivan » Fri Mar 22, 2019 10:54 am

My Pocket Rocket Free Flight duration model was designed in 1962 for the Cox .01 tiny motor. The motor came with a spring clip and was advertised as the "fastest Revving Tie Clip in the World. (27,000 rpm). I still have the original Plans.
In 1963 Aeromodeller turned down the plans for publication, but in the final days of the Model Builder Magazine they had accepted it for publication. Unfortunately the magazine folded before it was published.
I redrew the plans in CAD and built another in 1991 which has lain in the pile since. I put the plans on Outerzone https://outerzone.co.uk/plan_details.asp?ID=2133

In the last few months I have had a few people build the model both I/C and Electric. So I decided to build a new one. I pulled out the old one but the wing and tail looked very sad with tattered tissue covering and I planned on building another replacement wing. Ever try and remove old tissue covering from a model?

Diesel Danny from Australia suggested putting the wing in a plastic bag with a couple of tablespoons of acetone and leave it overnight. I did this and lo and behold the tissue peeled right off leaving a pristine wing.
Well the original has been refurbished and the new model built and both are now ready for covering. Uncovered WITH motors but not covered the new one weighs 26 grams and the old one 28 gm (under an ounce). The old one ready to fly was 1.24 ounces.

I only had a tank backplate for my second motor and decided to make a mount using my 3D printer. So far it seems to be working well.

Three of the photos show as broken links but clicking on them will open them.

Great stuff, John! Thanks for sharing with our HEFA community!

And I must say... after seeing that little motor - I am surprised that it works - so small!

Could not decide what colour scheme to finish my Pockets so decided to go with my Blizzard E 36 Electric models scheme.

If you want a comparison photo of this engine and a larger engine, there is such a photo on either this forum or Shearwater. I took the photo and posted it as “Size matters”.
