Mirage 2000 (by Fly-Fly) project..

Unread post by retiredVTT » Sun Oct 14, 2018 1:55 pm

Here is a link to my "favorite video from 2018"..!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AjAnevrhC20

I have watched this video many times and can't get the grin off my face for many moments after viewing. First of all check out the location..we should all be so fortunate to have a flying field like this. However, it was a surprise the first time I saw the "milk truck" vehicle coming across the end of the flying area..!

The next thing that caught my attention was how easily this EDF was launched; no major loss of altitude upon hand launching....Bonus..!

The overall speed, and climb, and finally the smooth landing, all said one thing...."gotta have one of these..!"

..more to follow,
Bill

So the order was placed and we await delivery...this will just be for the airframe and probably a cheap 90mm fan. I fully expect to upgrade the fan, add a 100amp ESC, and fly with either a 5S or 6S lipo pack. Couple of "strong" servos will complete the accessories required. (Speaking of servos, I have some info on a "Tactic 25" servo that has a ton of torque, at a very reasonable price of $US19.00, and only weighs 25 grams. Check them out at Tower Hobby. I got this info from a post by Gary Wright, a long time flyer from Florida, who designed the original "E3D model", back around 2002. When Gary speaks RC...people listen..!)

Very nice Bill, I was looking very close at the mirage 2000, but decided to go for the BeaHawk made by FlyFly , from Hobby88.com . Mine is 6-cell ,100Aesc.

Hi Dennis,
Your "hawk" will be a nice one, for sure. The large delta wing on the Mirage was a factor on my decision. Should help it land on our smaller Shannon airstrip.
I don't plan to use any wheels, just a nice protective covering of clear, thick, poly on the bottom. MSC sell a nice 2 sheet pkg that the car guys use.

Hi guys,

For those of us with shallower pockets, here is the 70 mm EDF BAe Hawk I recently acquired from Hobby King:

And here it is Monday morning at the Beaver Bank Road airfield. Note the tail rudder and duct tape canopy securements are my own modifications...

Jeff.... DO TELL! How did it fly / handle? $48.50 is definitely more shallow - just what we need / like! Looks like you need to add your own motor, servos, ESC, receiver, etc.... but $48.50 is a good price, for sure.

How much flight time? Would you recommend?

Brian,

I did the maiden flight at SP two Saturdays ago. For the first flights I flew it as a hand launch / belly lander. After several flights at Shannon, I put the wheels on and have been flying it from the BB Road paved runway. Here is how I have equipped it:

50 amp Aerostar ESC
Turnigy Typhoon 2215H 450 heli motor
4 servos - 1 elev, 1 aileron, 1 nose wheel (metal gear), 1 tail rudder
OrangeRX 6 Ch receiver

The kit comes with the EDF unit and a 3.17 mm motor shaft adapter, so one of my spare 450 heli motors worked nicely (3550 kv). I use 4S 2200 mAh Zippy Compact LiPos, but there is room (and CG range) for a slightly larger pack. My setup draws 43 amps at WOT and I would estimate a thrust to weight ratio of about 0.7 to 0.8. It's no rocket but certainly a nice scale jet. The roll and pitch rates are also very scale. The jet is very stable in the air with the recommended CG (marked on the underside of the wing). I get 2:30 minutes of flight time with my style of flying (loops and rolls).

I would recommend this kit in fact I am thinking of ordering a spare for this price. I got free Fedex ground shipping from the US warehouse (with a couple of 4S LiPo packs). If you get this kit I would highly recommend doing the tail rudder mod as it helps the jet track better during turns.
