Re: Page Aviation 80"Cub build
..finally got the side doors hinged to my satisfaction, and then installed the latch to keep them secured throughout the many loops that I expect this Cub to do...!
..as mentioned earlier, the hinges and even the 3/8" flat head screws are available at local Lee Valley stores.
I hope to start the wing next week.

Re: Page Aviation 80"Cub build
I got a start on the wing. I wanted to divide the wing into two sections and the designer recommended leaving the center section attached to one half of the wing; so after much thinking I came up with a 3/8" hardwood dowel that will be attached to the right hand section and will plug into the center section which is attached to the left half of the wing. The theory is that the wing struts will take the load on this wing, so the dowel does not need to be that large. However I have replaced the lite ply and balsa ribs, (four of them), in the connection area, with much stronger ones made from 5 ply aircraft plywood with a 1/8" thickness.
The attached pics show these four ribs. The connection of the two sections will occur between ribs #2 and #3.

These pics show some progress on the right hand section of the wing.

The smaller half of the wing is now framed, so the larger half will be next.
Just had to see what it would look like, and since it won't fly on half a wing, I'll have to push on next week..!

Ok...it's not all about building planes in this house..!
...away from the workshop, other "masterpieces" are taking shape!
.."smells so good!"

Fantastic build Bill. Thanks for the huge effort to document your progress for us all.
Im trying to understand the odd cutouts in your wing ribs that are not all identical. Is there some additional spars or bracing that is going to be installed ?

Steve, the odd cutouts represent the small "subribs" that are in between the main ribs, and a couple of these subribs were slightly different, near the left end of this wing section.steve wrote:Fantastic build Bill. Thanks for the huge effort to document your progress for us all.

Re: Page Aviation 80"Cub build
later edit on Dec 24th., 9:30pm..
The girls went visiting this Xmas eve, so I got a couple hours in Santa's workshop, and gave myself a nice present..!
..the larger section of the two piece wing got completed enough to "fit both sections together on the fuselage" to correct any small screw ups..and there were a couple.
I kept the last rib unglued until I had the complete wing mounted so I could make a final adjustment on it, and it all came together quite well. It's nice to have this part of the build complete, and I think each time I put these two sections into a wing bag I'll appreciate splitting the wing.

Re: Page Aviation 80"Cub build
..edit on Dec 25th ......Merry Christmas everyone..!
...to keep this winter project on going, I had the support of my son today with some Xmas funds..!
He funded a fiberglas cowl from Fiberglas Specialities, a big 15 foot roll of Olive Drab Solartex covering, and there's enough left to order a Funcub, so I can get that one off my bucket list.
Should be an interesting 2016 at the field..!
