PBF Indoor Flier

Here's something I put together for indoor that should be a little more durable than the Parkzone micros. It's another design from Leadfeather on RC Groups. The "wing" is 18" x 18", 6mm EPP, and will have a Blue Wonder 1500kv power setup using small 2S (360/460) batteries. The prop will be protected with a carbon tube across the front to minimize damage from wall / floor contact.

Had the PBF out for its first test flights tonight in the gym at HERH. AUW with 2S 360 came out at just over 150g. Not bad, it likes to putter around slowly doing HA. The elevons are not that effective for turning in HA. But, she can spin around pretty quick with the rudder. There is plenty of power. But, I didn't want to try any acrobatics indoors yet.

It looked great in the air Karl. I really like the paint and especially the invisible wheels!

Most of the foamies out there only turn well on rudder. I flew straight into the wall a few times before I discovered that.

I'm so impressed with this design, and having seen it fly indoors today, that I poured over the thread for a hour or so tonight in anticipation of building one.
Karl, you brought in your EPP but do you know if John has any sheets at the MH shop..?

I am 99.9% sure that MH does not have any EPP at all. You can get 10 sheets of 6mm EPP, 18x36, from rcfoam.com for $53 delivered. These guys are great to deal with. Get some carbon from them too. It is cheap there and doesn't add to the shipping cost.

I might have an extra 6mm EPP sheet I can spare if you are interested.

Ok...in the meantime I'm thinking of building one from 6mm Depron...would it be more fragile?

The Depron is certainly not as crash proof as the EPP. Probably not a big deal for this guy. However, 6mm Depron is about 75% heavier than 6mm EPP. I forget what my bare airframe was, but I'd guess you're looking at around 1.5oz more for a Depron build.

Wow..did not think about weight...,really, 75% heavier!
Did you print the plan in tiled sheets..or have it done on one sheet...I know a guy who could do that..!

Yes, really! This chart shows weights and densities for various foams. I just weighed one sheet of each and the chart is pretty accurate. The last bunch of EPP I got was actually even a bit lighter than normal.

I printed my plans tiled and then taped together. It can be a pain to get things lined up though. I then do a rough cut around the parts and glue those to a sheet of white poster board. Do the final cuts with an Xacto (#11) or scissors. You can then pin these templates right to the foam and use the edges as a guide for your cutting tool.
