HYPERION EXTRA 260 - 40e

Unread post by retiredVTT » Thu Oct 29, 2009 7:33 pm

Another B-day this week, and along came this guy in a five foot box (double-boxed) from Air-Craft World in Japan...a nice buy as they reduced the model to $114.00US We won't mention shipping as that is getting bad, everywhere, due to these box sizes.

You can read the promo flyer....this is not a small plane, as they suggest 900 Watts and a 5S pack. But what I read, on RCGroups, suggests a quality 4S-3300mah pack, a motor that cruises on 600Watts, and keep the weight to 4 lbs, 4 ozs.

Whoo..that's scary...not the 1Kw of power but the fact that you nailed it..

I started checking my motor supply and yes there are two Scorpion motors here that qualify...the 1000Watt job is presently in the Stubby, while a 1300 Watt heli version is waiting patiently to be used in something. It would appear that putting the 1300W into the Stubby would be easier as the heli motors do not really "back mount" very well and Stubby has it's own Alluminum mount.

So yes, a 1kw motor run conservatively at say 600 to 700 watts on cruise should work nicely with some extra watts on tap for "those occasions"..!

(plus..they included those "900Watt" decals...so I would not want to misrepresent the model)

Actually...when one does the math...and with P=ExI it is elementary that to derive 900 Watts with a current of say 50 amps will require a pack producing 18 volts.....Bingo..5S..!

50 amps would equate to driving a 3200mah at 16C so that would hardly warm up the pack..which is good!

An 80 amp esc would also run cool passing just 50 amps..I think!

So to go this route I would velcro a 3S pack with a 2S pack...and run them in series. This way you can separate them for charging as my FMA 4S charger only charges up to 4S packs.

Have not started this project yet, although I did pick up another Scorpion motor for it...rated at 1300 Watts, so it should just laugh when I ask it for 900..!

Came across this one for sale and could not resist posting an in flight picture of it ..!
Sort of kindles the juices to get a start on it....but I look around the Hangar and don't see an empty hook to hang it ..!

Equation: (Hyperion Extra 260 - 40e) + (1300 watt motor) = "where did it go????"
