Plan Shannon: Public Presentation
Canada 150 Trail Draft Concept

Canada Lands is pleased to invite the community to view the concept plan for the new Canada 150 Trail at the Shannon Park lands. The evening will include a presentation followed by informal conversation.

A result of a public consultation process, the Canada 150 Trail will be part of Canada's sesquicentennial celebrations and represent the first completed component of the Shannon Park project. The trail will measure up to 1115m in length and highlight to visitors the natural beauty of the site; commemorate the history of Halifax Harbour; respect the indigenous and military heritage of the site and provide stunning vantages of the waterfront.
If you are interested in attending, please mark your calendar and RSVP through: shannonpark@clc.ca

There were three of us at this public presentation for the future of the Shannon Park area: John F, John O'S and myself. The session was well prepared and Chris of CLC did a very good presentation. This presentation is on the WEB at the following URL: http://www.shannonpark.ca/wp-content/up ... 7-2017.pdf

Key to the start of this is a new lookoff and 1km walking trail, starting at the parking lot opposite Shannon Park school. The construction area will be fenced off and a new 3m wide crushed gravel pathway will be added to the water. The tender for this phase is expected to be published within the next 4-6 weeks and construction will start this summer... finishing in the fall.

The next phase, as depicted on sheet 12 of the PDF, is the main field adjacent to the school, tentatively starting in 2018.

We thanked Chris for his support of our club. The "easy button" for him would be to no longer authorize our permission at the field and we are fortunate that he is supporting our club activities. He did mention that our club is felt not to be an issue BUT that others use the field and fly lots of drones / quadcopters / UAVs in the construction zone which is met with some frustrations from CLC and the construction crews. To me, this emphasizes the importance of our members continuing to be always safety-conscious: we certainly do not want to be a problem for anyone in the public or with CLC.

The future of SP is looking quite well thought out and is certainly great for the community.

Brian,

Do you have a sense when flying at Shannon will ultimately be shut down?

Steve,

That is the $1M question..... currently, my understanding is that our approval for the field extends to June 30. We are hopeful that an extension will be provided through the summer but this is by no means a "given". We have a clear requirement to operate safely in-order to eliminate any issues for the folks at CLC.

I believe that our HEFA organization fits well in the CLC mandate with lots of member diversity from the local community.

Fingers crossed.

Brian
