Micro F-22

Unread post by karlpenney » Tue Sep 28, 2010 9:44 pm

Stumbled across a nice micro F-22 while surfing around today and thought it might be interesting for indoors. It's a 16" WS with a 9g TGY 1818 3500Kv motor and GWS 4x4 prop on a small 2S. AUW is supposed to be less than 4oz. Here's the link - http://www.dynamicfoamy.com/F22%20Micro.html. Unfortunately no video for it yet. I assume it's all 3mm depron and is clearly based on the larger size F-22 plans on rc.tomhe.net. Not sure if I will get one of the kits or try to build one from scratch. Anyone else interested?

Karl,

Sounds excellent ! Maybe some F22 formation flying.

I think I will Scratch build:

- Eflite park 250
- BP 8amp esc
- prop...6" (?)
- BMS 303 Servos
- 2s 200-400 mah
- 3mm depron
- gws receiver ......thats right! 72 mhz

Stay tuned......(looks through box of bits and bites of foam)

They have lots of cool looking stuff. I was looking at their Extra 300 and the Dynex 2.4 - a small profile F3P pattern ship designed to take leftovers from beat up micro 4-sites like mine... http://www.dynamicfoamy.com/DYNEX%202-4.html

The F-22 is nice too. Hell, they're all nice. I better not though, between the stryker and the upcoming funcopter, I think I'm at the limit.

I think I'll just get their Micro F-22 airframe and save the hassle of trying to figure all the scaling details out. Let me know if you want to order anything from there and we can combine.

I had a bit of left over foam and with some minor calculations, I decided to cut some pieces. As the one mentioned in the original post, this one will be 17" wide and approx 25" long. I made the prop slot a bit bigger to accept a 7" prop but failed to scale the width to accept. I may look a bit odd when complete but with a park 250, I dont think the 4-6" prop will work. My AUW needs to be no greater than 4 Oz or the speed will be to great for indoor and I will most certainly thunder it in.

I have always had a tough time with "butt" joining foam together. CA is too messy and doesnt sand, epoxy is heavy and messy also, GWS glue works okay but this time I tried Eileens tacky glue and all looks good so far. It is only 3mm foam so the test will be once it is together . If anyone has any suggestions please post ! I may have to resort to Blederm but it doesnt hold paint well unless you prime with WBPU first

BTW: If I bring another plane into this house before I take care of some of the overdue home maintenance I have been procrastinating about during the rc flying season, I may have more room than I bargained for..... :) I figure if I build another, I havent purchased one, it's already in the house, and my lovely bride will remain.

Hey Steve....third line, first paragraph..."I may look a bit odd" .....No, you don't look odd at all, maybe different..but not odd..!

Anyway, project looks good...so just how much more foam you got..?

I put that in there Bill as a "subliminal" message to see who was actually reading the posts. I didn't think anyone was really looking ;)

I will start painting tonight on the mini F22 and hopefully assembly tomorrow night after work. I dont care much for the 3mm foam as it is very brittle but for small planes like this it is necessary, to keep the AUW down. I guessed at the dimensions and thought if the one that Karl referred to was micro, then I would size to get it as close to that as possible.

From my other small flyers I have built, 4-5 ounces seems to be the magic number for the park 250. The bare airframe weighs 3/4 of an ounce so far

We will see what happens....

The maker of the Micro F-22 just sent me a link to a short video showing some indoor flight. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eoiz2HpFGYc

I think that is with a GWS 4040 prop. You could probably use a 4025 to slow it down even more.

Looks like pretty high alpha on that video Karl, I don't expect less pitch is going to help it fly any slower but some transparent air brakes might do the trick.

Speaking of high alpha indoor flight... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CeGWG3jz0B8
Maybe if the DX6i elevon tip pans out I can harrier my new stryker indoors! [kidding]

Here is the completed airframe.

- 3mm Depron
- Weight - approx. 1 ounce
- Paint - Createx air brush paint, magic marker and and apple barrel craft paint for the red and white on the stab tips..

Just need to add the electronics and see what happens
