Any suggestions for reading material for a newbie?

These thread do have lots of info. I would also look up Lipos so you can get familiar with them. They need a little care compared to nicad or nmhd batteries.
The biggest issue you will encounter with electrics is trying to determine motor - prop - battery - esc combos. If you can find good ready material I would recommend browsing it.
Since most arf planes come with a setup already you won't have to worry about it for the first while. When you are ready to upgrade, talk with people at the field. The type of plane and flying style determine the power setup. Any question you have along the way can be answered by at least 1 person at the field.

The Wattflyer "beginner" forum has some great "sticky" threads up-front on topics like how to fly, determining power set-ups, "6 keys to success" and the like. I found it very helpful.
Once I got past the basics I found more specific info on the http://www.rcgroups.com forums, mainly, I assume, because it has more members.
