ESC's - Can I safely LENGTHEN the LEADS..?

Unread post by retiredVTT » Tue Sep 01, 2009 8:53 pm

Can I lengthen the leads on an ESC without causing a problem?.
The answer is YES, with a condition...and that condition is that you do it on the motor lead side and NOT on the battery side..!
If there is no choice but to add wire to the battery side..you should be adding capacitors as well to the ESC.

Here is a thread I found on RCGroups about this,

http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthre ... 2523&pp=30..

An example of when you might have to do this...is with a plane that has the motor up on a pylon and the battery is down in the fuselage.....you might have to lengthen the motor wires by 12 inches or more.

Another article from RCG member Bernard Crawley (Boeing engineer) written back in 2002 on the subject of lengthrning esc leads and also a mention about UBEC's which were just coming available.

The extensions between the ESCs and motors on the Tricopter are an additional 9 inches, and nobody has had problems with the motors acting up.

Yes, from what I've read, it's when you add two feet or more to the esc to battery length you run the risk of popping the capacitors unless you increase the capacitor values. Better to lengthen the esc to motor wires.
