Here is a formula that allows the calculation of wing loading in just one step:
Wing loading in oz./sq ft. = weight in pounds x 2304 divided by wing area in square inches.
..so if the specs say this 6 pound model has a wing area of 700 sq inches...
Wing loading is found this way: 6 x 2304 divided by 700 = 19.74 ozs/sq ft.
Now turning the formula around...if we know what wing loading we want, and desire to know the required wing area we need for a given weight..
Weight x 2304 divided by wing loading = wing area...
8 lb plane with a desired wing loading of 18ozs/sq ft will need a wing area of 1024 sq inches. (8 x 2304 divided by 18 = 1024)
