How it was more than 60 years ago. The aviation craze had struck the north American public hard. The young kid Fred Sage is still very active in Free Flight modelling.
Model flying has changed drastically, but it all evolved from the efforts of these people. The hobby was strongly supported by the US military and corporate sponsors who regarded it as a positive and constructive influence on upcoming citizens. Far cry from the derisive "toys for boys" attitude with which the public regard the hobby today.
