Re: 2017 Porters Lake Ice Fly
It's ON!!!
The Porters Lake Ice Fly is a go for Saturday 18 March 2017.
I have just measured the ice in the bay in front of my house and it is 12” thick within at least 50 ft of the shoreline and, at 200 ft from shore, it is 6” thick. Plenty safe. Although the lake has opened up outside of and surrounding my bay, there still exists nearly as much ice-covered real estate as there is flying area at Shannon Park.
The weather forecast for Saturday looks perfect with sunshine and high temps of +1 deg C and winds NW at 15 knots diminishing to light in the afternoon. Also, the cold overnight lows for the next two nights will only help the ice situation.
Based on the wind and the cold morning temperature forecast, I see no reason to start the event at the crack of dawn. Therefore the event will begin officially at 10 am, but if you are a sucker for the cold, feel free to come earlier – just no loud (i.e. non-electric powered) planes before 10 am, to keep my neighbours happy. The event will continue until the last flier has had his fill or sunset, whichever comes first.
Mary will, of course, be serving a feast of home-made chili and pulled pork sandwiches for lunch, not to mention a plethora of her baked goodies, so be sure to bring your appetites. There will also be plenty of hot chocolate, coffee and tea on hand to take off some of the chill. The house will be open to everyone throughout the day to use the washroom or just hang out and warm up.
In case you happen to doubt your ability to land your aircraft within a square kilometer area, or for some unforeseen reason lose control over open water, no need for concern, as I will be quite happy to don my winter surfing wetsuit and paddle out to retrieve it.
The address is 2155 Crowell Rd, East Lawrencetown (hang a left just past Lawrencetown Beach or take exit 19 off the 107 Hwy). Look for the red, green and yellow windsock on the side of the road. Call me at (902)440-3981 if you have any questions.
So bring a lawn chair and your fleet of planes and Mary and I will see you on the ice!

Also, for everyone's info, the ice surface has hardly any snow on it, so wheeled aircraft will work fine - no need for skiis.
The latest forecast now has the high on Saturday as +4!!!! Awesome!
And here's the wind forecast: "Wind light becoming northwest 10 to 15 knots this morning then becoming light early this evening. Wind becoming north 15 Saturday morning then diminishing to light near noon Saturday". Just as awesome!

Vic, hope Mary, yourself or another can get some photos for me for the maac newsletter and perhaps a write up. I'm a bingo widower on Saturdays and often the whole weekend. Lol, don't laugh, the car is mine on summer weekends. Haha

Re: 2017 Porters Lake Ice Fly
It was a very good day of flying. Mind you I did fly until most everybody left, as there were so many people to see and interesting discussions going on, I didn't want to miss out.
Too bad the sun didn't present itself.
It was nice to the the guys from the valley.
The maiden voyage of the gyroplane didn't go so well, but no damage. The installation of a pre-rotator should solve most of the issue.
Even the my flights with the Polaris were sort of uneventful. No "Steve Austin" style landings yesterday.
The food was great, and the conversation, and joking just as good.
Thanks Vic & Mary for putting this on.
