HEFA and Shearwater RC Flyers "joint venture"

Unread post by retiredVTT » Tue Oct 21, 2014 11:43 pm

Three executive members from both HEFA and Shearwater RC Flyers met last evening to discuss the merits of "joint hosting" one 2015 Fun Fly. This one event would replace the two events that the Clubs have held for several years now. This idea comes out of the fact that attendance figures for each Club had slipped somewhat in 2014.

At our AGM on November 6th, a discussion will be held, and HEFA members will be asked to vote on this idea.

If approved by the memberships of the two Clubs, the 2015 event would be held on July 18th, with rain date being the 19th.

A tentative name for this event would be the Maritime RC Air Show, and location would be the 10k asphalt runway at Shearwater.

There would be a need for several more members from each Club to pull off a successful joint venture such as this, so if this idea has you excited, let us know by either stating so here, or at the upcoming AGM.

cheers,

Bill

At the November AGM the membership voted to accept the recommendation of the Executive in "joint hosting" a 2015 Fun Fly with the members of the Shearwater RC Flyers (SRCF).

In order to proceed with this venture, there needs to be a number of committees formed, perhaps four; and each committee will require perhaps four members; two from each Club.

So we need HEFA members for these committees, and we ask that you post your name here if you are willing to assist us with this event. To date we are looking at the July 18-19 weekend, but that is not firmed up yet. Location of the event would be at Shearwater.

The event coordinators would like to form their committees at the next meeting, planned for mid February, so we need to act on this now.

thanks,
Bill

An update on where things are in regard to the proposed "joint venture" Fun Fly this year...

First off, Shearwater RC Flyers (SRCF) have held their AGM meeting two nights ago and came out of that with a new Executive, with Vic Ruzgys taking over from Dave Rowe as President. We at HEFA are familiar with Vic as he is on our Board of Directors as well, and look forward to working with him on this joint venture no matter which "hat" he wears.

SRCF have a volunteer staff in place to head up various divisions of this event...things like PR, prizes, parking, food, and contest director. It is now time for HEFA to also come forth with volunteers for these individual positions. Remembering back to our AGM in November, the vote was unanimous to proceed with this joint venture, so now is the time to get onboard. Once we have our people in place, hopefully within two weeks, it will be time to bring the staff from both clubs together to set up the actual events of the big day. Contact any Director, as well as HEFA Event Coordinator Andrew Curran, for further details on what part of this you want to help with.

Yes, the big runway at Shearwater now contains a thousand cars from Auto-port, due to our killer winter; however it is hoped they will be removed within weeks.

To my knowledge we are still looking at a mid July weekend date for this event.

that's it for now,

Bill F.

Thanks, Bill, for posting this. And yes, the plan is to proceed with the joint Fun Fly to be held on the weekend of 17, 18, 19 July 2015.

The actual Fun Fly is to be a one day event, with Saturday being the primary date and Sunday as the back-up in case of rain. The Friday afternoon/evening will be for set-up, arrival of any campers/out-of-town guests, and some late evening/night flying. Sunday will be a day of regular flying for any and all who wish to keep aviating, and then of course the tear-down and clean-up.

As Bill said, this is a joint event, so we would like to see assistance from members of both clubs, as well as input from each organization on what they might like to see at this event. I see it as a total win-win for both clubs. Lots of hands to make the work light, lots of variety in the flying to be done and watched, plenty of fun contests, and hopefully, with the kind generosity of our local businesses, lots of great prizes. Rather than spreading ourselves thin here in Halifax with two seperate events in the same summer, we can have one big, fun, bash that will maximize the benefit for both organizations. And - need I mention - the luxury of one super-huge flying venue!

I hope you are all as excited about this as I am! Lets make this the "Flugparty" of the summer!

Cheers,
Vic

Not much "comment" regarding the joint venture funfly, but here is an update, which is actually a change of date for the event.

It will be held the weekend of AUGUST 8th, 2015. Main events go on Saturday, Camping available on Friday and Saturday night, general flying on Sunday.

Time now for HEFA to have some chair-persons come forward to work with those from SRCF that have already stepped up.

We are still looking for members to help assist in a leader capacity with members from the Shearwater Flyers Club to make the August 8th Fun Fly a Joint Venture.

To date, the only members discussing this have been the Directors.

Let us know who is willing to help out.

thanks,
Bill

To date all developments for the HEFA and Shearwater RC Flyers have remained a well hidden mystery to the general membership of HEFA.
What exactly are the support requirements and how can we general members contribute?
WE need to be better informed on the progress.

Gentlemen,

My apologies for not getting this out sooner.

The following list outlines the duties which are required to make the Fun Fly happen. Each duty requires an OPI (Officer of Primary Interest - sorry for the military terminology) or committee head, if you prefer. The idea is that each OPI responsibility be shared by a Shearwater and a HEFA volunteer. The OPIs don't necessarily have to do the work, but need to organize a group of club members to assist in the duties, whatever they may be. The idea being that many hands make light work, and to have everyone involved in making the event a success.

Here are the duties and the list of club members already assigned to each:

Position______________Shearwater OPI_________HEFA OPI

Advertising/PR - Ron Stuart______________Dave McIsaac/Mary Jefferson

Logistics - Red John_______________________Vic Ruzgys

Contest Director - Richard Giles

Camping - Kevin McKay

Food - Kevin McKay

Parking - John Fennel

Base Coordination - Paul Quinn________________________Vic Ruzgys

Safety Officer - Marc Cayouette

As you can see, the HEFA side of the list is rather empty, so I am soliciting volunteers to assist in this endeavor.

If you have any specific questions regarding what's involved in a specific task, please let me know. I will then get your SRCF counterpart to contact you and the planning and preparation can begin.

The event poster is being put together as we speak.

Thanks,
Vic
