You may have heard various points of view regarding recent Transport Canada guidelines for the operation of UAV's.

The MAAC president provided this update back in November 2014 which at the time helped to clarify the TC guidelines as well as show us that there is a very close relationship between MAAC and TC.

Now, three months later we are again hearing that recent guidelines from TC may also contain an "altitude restriction" that could adversely affect our model aircraft flying. I would suggest to all members that they wait for further updates from MAAC before climbing aboard any soapboxes. This is one of the reason that we join MAAC; they do the negotiations on our behalf. Read your Model Aviation Canada issues, or check the MAAC website to keep abreast of the situation.

cheers,
Bill

News : The recent releases from Transport Canada with regard to the safe operation of UAVs and drones has caused some concern amongst the MAAC membership because the use of the words “model aircraft” as set out in the release of their new guidelines. This term encompasses all aspects of modeling as compared to UAV’s and Drones.
The MAAC team has been in two meetings with Transport Canada since the release of their new guidelines, and we have been assured on both occasions by them that it is not the intent to target the MAAC members.
The guidelines were produced in reaction to the proliferation of UAVs and drones. We, as the organization of MAAC, strongly endorse and work closely with Transport Canada; unfortunately the guidelines that were put out included the term (model aircraft). Transport Canada is now aware that some of the guidelines could negatively impact on our hobby but they have repeatedly told us it was not the intent to affect MAAC members that follow our safety code. Transport Canada has acknowledged our excellent safety record.
The MAAC team has a long track record of working with Transport Canada, in close co-operation rather than in confrontation. We will work constructively and cooperatively with TC as they develop UAS regulation As this good relationship will continue, the members will be kept appraised of any future developments.
