How Flying Used to Be.

Unread post by saboo » Fri Sep 14, 2018 1:38 pm

For some of us, it still is.

These are videos of dead stick landings and hand launches of small glow power planes.

Many flights yesterday, Thursday the 13th of September 2018, at Blockhouse field. 049 glow engines filled the sky for exciting and satisfying flights. Plane is one of several that were flown.

The plane is an new build, scratch built, ACE Whizard. Powered by a Cox Black Widow glow engine. Flight time of about 3:45. A few minutes to refuel, a few flicks of the prop, and into the air again, and again. When trimmed properly, they fly hands off, and as in the video, practically fly out of your hand.

Plane was built and is owned by Steven Swinamer of Chester. Some flights by me.

So if you want to experience this or build new planes, we have plans and can help.

Or if you have old Cox glow engines that you want to give to a good home, we will be glad to accept them. They will get put to use.

Enjoy.

That's awesome Saboo! A lot great memories with the cox 049's. I often tell the story of starting my cox airplane in my bedroom yesterday when I was a kid. :)

The ace whizard and other similar designs were by Ken Willard I believe. https://www.modelaircraft.org/sites/def ... ardKen.pdf

They are neat airplanes!

Hey Al, thanks for posting that link....another trip down "memory lane".
I got on that link and had forgot that years ago after Ken's death I had asked the AMA about updating their info regarding Ken's many accomplishments. His "Sunday Flyer" columns every month in RC Modeller magazine were worth much more than the $2.25 price of the magazine, (even if it was probably my "hourly rate" at the time.)
He also designed many models for flying off water...including the Pondhopper, and the Puddlejumper.
He certainly crammed a lot into his 81 years..!
