Well, the repairs to Stubby dragged out over the winter, but I put a push on in the past couple of weeks to have her ready for a re-maiden on Good Friday..and I'm pleased to say that she is ready.

Weather permitting, I hope to have Stubby airborn again Friday morning at Shannon.

A complete recover job was necessary, with one exception, the rudder had separated from the stab, when I tried to "motor it off the tower" back in October, and it floated down and was protected from the elements.

I changed motors and went with a Scorpion 3026-12. It's rated at 1000 Watts but I'm seeing only 425 Watts from a 4S-3300 pac with a 12/6 prop. Plenty of gusto, but maybe a 13/6 might be in order. I tried a 14/7 with a 3S 5000mah pack and saw 400 Watts with a 40 amp draw.
This motor has a low KV of 840.

Better Looking..? Well, not really Jim, for some reason the covering job did not go as well the second time around. Probably a case of me not enjoying doing the same job TWICE. However, some future trim will conceal a couple of blunders and the cowl repainting has to wait for outdoor summer temps. But on a positive note, we do have a pilot aboard now, so staying on course should be easier..!

Well Rick, we got the good weather we wanted and I was glad you got some video of the remaiden.
I put three flights on Stubby today and things went quite well. I have a few changes to make, like different aileron servos due to some centering issues, but I'm pleased, and I look forward to the flight video.

OK...it was another long weekend (Easter) when I last flew Stubby so here we are going into Thanksgiving weekend '09 so let's get her done again.

The video from that last session never showed up...hope we can get some this time. I was hoping to try out a 5S lipo pack but I just found out that my Scorpion Commander Esc is not rated for above 16.8 volts (4S) so that idea has been scrubbed.
When I hooked up 5 cells to it last night the esc armed itself but then went into a continuous beep beep beep..
When I checked further and desiphered the beeps...turns out it was saying,

.."dummy..! I'm rated at 16.8 vts, anything over that and I'll beep my heart out before I fry my FET's..!"

Of course I don't take that kind of talk from a puny ESC...so I turned the garage light out and left..!

Actually I went onto the Scorpion website and must have timed it perfect because within 30 minutes I heard from the distributor, Lucien Miller, that what I suspected was a fact...4S is the limit for the motor circuit.

So with 4S and a 12/6 prop I'm seeing 41 amps and 580 Watts at full throttle so it will fly...all 93 oz of it..!
Strange how figures work...580 Watts with 5.8 pounds equals...ta da..100 Watts per pound..!

756 sq inch wingspan = 5.25 sq ft of area holding up 93 oz = a wing loading of 17.7 oz per sq ft.

Just a big ole overgrown ParkFlyer..!

Hope Sunday is a fine day..!

Stubby did fly on Thanksgiving Sunday...but on 4S the power just seems adequate and so on Monday, with the wind blowing a gale, it was time to satisfy that "need for speed" and do some hot-roding.

First thing was to replace the Scorpion 4S esc with a "Simple 70 opto" esc that would allow the use of 5S packs.

With that done..it was time to load both barrels (a 3200mah 2S in series with a 3300mah 3S) in series with the Wattmeter...plane on the garage floor with me standing in front of the horizontal stab. I have not done that since the olden days of glow fueled planes..!

I was not disappointed...with the same 12/6 APCe prop, the meter climbed to 51 amps and 802 Watts before I shut 'er down in the interest of self preservation..!
Wow..I had just joined the "50 amp Club"..!

I think I'm going to like it ...!

Hope this weekend will give us liftoff weather..!

Stubby flew today for the first time with electrons coming from a 5S configured lipo pack and there was a definite differance with Delsey..! (to coin a phrase from a very old toilet-paper ad..!)

Take off was more spirited and a couple of aileron rolls, with some inverted flight, proved that there is no substitute for Watts, when it comes to the performance of an electric motor.

I have submitted a pic of Stubby to the Scorpion motor honor roll at the following site. (bottom of page 5)

I posted some pics of Stubby over Shannon on the Photobucket website, and I'll link one of the pics here as a test.

Posting pics this way lowers the storage demands on the HEFA site.

Time marches on...with a new flying season upon us it's time to give some attention to getting Stubby airborn again. Some new paint for the cowl, hopefully a new set of wheelpants (if Chris can find the mate to one he has!) some more mods to the power system and she will be ready again.

Here is a "slideshow" of pics from 2008 showing Stubby over Shannon as taken by Rick M.
