Stubby up front..!

Unread post by retiredVTT » Thu Oct 02, 2008 3:44 am

I'm honored to have my STUBBY up front and center, in the opening page of this HEFA website.

STUBBY was built from RCM plan #1235, designed by Ron Daniels of Ontario, Canada, and can be built using 85% of the Sig Seniorita kit.

The Stubby maiden flight video is here... http://www.vimeo.com/1727241

A phone call, from a near-by worker that watched over Stubby for those 29 days, was received early in Nov. '08 and Stubby was picked up and brought home.

Ok..repairs are underway this evening in Operating Theatre 1; Stubby has been sedated, and progress is being made on installing a new landing gear plate complete with bottom stringer formers. Slow dry epoxy is being used for maximum strength, therefore it is requested that the patient be immobilized for the duration of the night..!

lots of progress made on a rainy Sunday..!

I got the bottom repairs completed today with some new spruce rails, a couple of 1/16" ply reinforcements to two of the formers that were damaged and then some new stringers were added.

Also repaired the left side that had a large hole in it, cut out the damaged area and then framed it with balsa sticks and resheeted it.

Next will be to replace two of the three turtle deck stringers....and the fuselage will be ready for covering again.

Today, while removing some covering from the tail and seeing that some of the wood was quite wet, I realized that I better attend to the wing which I had just removed and hung up five days ago.
It was not easy to butcher all those many square feet of covering on the wing but it had to be done. What greeted me was considerable dampness, some areas of black dots...the killer mildew...a living organism, which left unchecked can destroy a fabric or WOOD..!
The wing tip balsa sheeting on top has actually caved in from being wet, I hope when it drys it will shrink and tighten, if not it will require replacing. Extremly little damage, one rib with a top piece missing, and a couple of areas where the wing was rubbing for days, and wore a groove into the leading edge.

So if it drys out ok, actually I may put the heat gun to it, it will need only minimum repairs and recovering. However since the ailerons are permanently attached now it will be harder to apply covering to all areas.

Here are some pics ..click on them to expand them,

Got some new covering on the bottom of the wing, now that it has dried out..!

This is the second time I've covered this wing and it again seems l-a-r-g-e...I guess the 12 inch chord has a lot to do with that.

As expected it's more difficult to cover with the ailerons attached, but it is doable.
