BUILDING BOARD

Unread post by retiredVTT » Wed Oct 29, 2008 9:59 pm

After five years my building board was getting ratty so tonight I renewed the top of it to prepare for some upcoming builds.

My bench is about 8' x 42" (I found with a 48" width, I could not get into the rear cabinets with ease) and is reasonable flat and level but things can change over time so I use a separate building board that I know is flat and when not in use can be stored away for protection.

I started with a 1.25 inch thick stair tread ...no not oak, but good ole particle board, chip board, sawdust and glue, whatever...(cheap, around $7.00 few years ago) baked in an oven, flat and smooth, and to keep it that way, I attached steel runners made from 1" angle.

For a top that will accept pins, I get a "damaged" ceiling tile from a building supply house, ($2.49 from Kent, Sackville, today) and use double sided carpet tape to secure it to the tread. Trim the edges and go around with duct tape to seal the edges and your done.
