FORMOSA 2 Slope Soarer

Unread post by retiredVTT » Mon Jul 27, 2015 9:30 pm

Working on something different; a FORMOSA 2 for the slope.

This old GWS kit was bought by a guy in Florida in 2005....sold to Shawn in Sackville (the creator of our HEFA website) in 2006, was passed on to me around 2008, and was stashed up in my "to do" garage loft until a week ago.

It has a nice large wing, and, being foam, is very light, so will need some ballast to keep from blowing away.

It has an under-wing compartment to allow ease of battery installation.

I'll try it out at the 'fest on August 22nd...!

48 hours before the planned Aug 22nd Slopefest, my FORMOSA 2 sloper is ready.
Sure takes a big hunk of weight to compensate for no motor and a lightweight 2S lipo pack, but when all was done, the all-up weight came in at 2 lbs, 4 ozs ....or 36 ounces even.

The wing was covered in Ultracote lite, and the fuselage was sprayed (at a distance) with Rustolium enamel and then some clear acrylic. (some foam was attacked by the propellant)

If it's a good flyer, I would do the fuselage over and next time mix some talc powder with varathane to "fill" the foam, then sand it and apply the colour. Sounds like an off-season project.

Well, the Foremosa2 did not prevail as a slope soarer in a 12 km wind on Saturday. At 36 ounces it was simply too heavy to maintain flight. So immediately after launch it went into a long and downward glide, picking up speed, and landing about one-third of the distance up from the water and snapping the foam fuselage right at the trailing edge of the wing. No other damage, so the fuselage will be repaired, and it will be rebuilt with a suitable electric power plant.

..stay tuned !
