COMBAT BUILD - HEFA Ground School 2013

Unread post by retiredVTT » Fri Apr 05, 2013 6:56 pm

We got started April 4th with the HEFA GSB 2013 and a couple hours into the build, near quitting time, I had made a boo boo with regard to "scoring the flutes" in the coroplast wing. So corrective measures where taken today and I have some pics to post that may prevent others from getting into trouble.

The idea is to have just ONE flute become the leading edge of the wing after folding. To get this result you must "score" or flatten the flutes on either side of the one flute that will be the leading edge. My problem was that after scoring the wing I had two open flutes so that the LE would have been too thick.

Instructor Ryan had a great idea in suggesting I run a wire rod through the flattened flute to open it up again. I had a .078 rod from MSC that did this job very well.

Then I carefully marked the correct flutes to score,,(measure, and remeasure, to make sure that the part that gets folded will align with the rear section). Then fold the wing.

Good stuff, Bill. Glad you got your leading edge sorted out. Thanks for the pics!

Hi Bill, I am very interested in the coro build you guys have on the go.Are you using 4 mil coro for the entire build and what model are you building. I have 3 full sheets of 4 mil but can't source any 2mil anywhere and most plans I have found say 4 mil will be too heavy.
Anyways looking forward to more info as the build goes along.
Thanks Mike

Mike,

You are correct, there is no local source for 2 mil coroplast. We are using 2.5 mil which is available, thankfully, from Sabic Polymers and Shapes in Burnside.

We are building 4 different models, which I specifically designed for combat - all profile-scale WWII fighters (P-51, P-40, FW190A and A6M5 Zero).

Thanks Vic, I will get in touch with them for some 2.5m coro. Looking forward to seeing the progress as they are being built. Any chance in getting a plan from you.
Thanks Mike

Mike,

Thanks for the interest in my designs, but I’m really not set up for providing plans to anyone.

My plans are hand-drawn on paper, so can’t be transmitted electronically. More importantly, they don’t contain sufficient detail to allow construction without a great deal of additional explanation. Although I may do so at some time in the future, I have not produced a detailed build photo log and instruction set.

Way in the back of my mind I was thinking that if the designs prove successful for our club combat contests and there is interest, I might possibly consider producing kits (in the interest of having more local people involved in competing in this class of combat). For now, I have my hands very full with just running this HEFA build seminar. As usually is the case, and as much as I enjoy doing this, it has turned out to be far more work than I anticipated.

Cheers,
Vic

Very cool, Mike. Please post pics of your Mig 3 build. I'd be very interested to see it.
