Thinking about a SPAD
I want something wildly different and scratch built for the winter. My only two requirements are FAST and STRONG. Well of course it needs to also be a quick build and waterproof
Inspired by my Mugi from last year but thinking much bigger and faster I came across the SPAD Derelict:
http://www.spadtothebone.com/SPAD/Derelict/
If you look into this you will see they reference "PVC gutter pipe" from Canada for the fuselage which it turns out they have at Kent as I found out today, although only one more piece left at the moment. This stuff is really strong as I found out trying to cut it in two to fit it in the car. lol.
It seems not many SPADs were built electric but I am up for the challenge!

Re: Thinking about a SPAD
Very cool, Rick. I'm a big fan of the SPADs. In fact, I went to a SPAD combat meet in Corona, California last year and it was a total blast. Those guys were having fun!
Most of the SPADs there were glow-powered semi-scale warbirds, but I have seen on-line that there are electric versions. With the power we have available to us in electric power systems these days, there's no reason not togo electric with these designs.
Good luck with the build!

Who is " local Coroplast® supplier" in Halifax, or is there a site you can order in from. Looks like an interesting project.

The 2mm coroplast is hard to get Robert. Last time Chris put in a group order for a bunch of us who wanted to build the Mugi.
If this SPAD turns out ok and you want to build one I probably have enough 2mm to supply you, otherwise Chris can probably be talked into ordering some for you. In any case I say wait and see.

Thanks Rick,
Think I'll see how yours turns out. Have a new G10 motor sitting on the desk that would look good in a SPAD.
I checked out the SPAD site as well, the twin engine SPAD (Twin DPS) looks interesting, lots to chose from.

I should also have mentioned Robert that the 4mm coroplast is readily available and for sure Chris can get some for you. Most of the SPADs are made of 4mm not 2mm.
I picked the Derelict because I think I can make the wing with a low profile and therefore minimal drag. That coupled with a monster power system ought to be interesting.

Re: Thinking about a SPAD
This is the motor I'm thinking of (mostly because I have one kicking around):
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/stor ... oduct=9258
It's meant for a 500 size heli of course but with a small prop and 6S battery it ought to kick butt. The power system will be designed to go full throttle for only a few seconds at a time.
One concern I have is limiting the speed at the prop tip. Even with something small like a 6x4 prop the tip speed at full throttle might be supersonic! I guess I'll try it and see...

Should be a very entertaining plane, the motor/prop will probably sound a bit strykeresk!
Looking forward to the spring

Re: Thinking about a SPAD
After a couple of evenings of messing around with various components and configurations and a lot of research on-line I've decided to put this project on hold for now...
