Nova Scotia RC laws

New postby easton.harris on Sat Apr 07, 2012 9:25 pm

Hey. Does anyone know what the laws are regarding electric RC flight in Halifax and surrounding area? Any restrictions or illegal places to fly. If anybody knows, the info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

To my knowledge the main restriction to ANY RC flying within the Halifax County area would be to stay 5kms or 3miles away for any airport.

I have flown electric models from various parks within the County and have not come across restrictions.

The sound of an RC model must always be considered and that is why, with electric models, we have enjoyed unrestricted flying within the city limits for several years, even though when three or more Strykers are put up at one time, the sound does become almost as objectionable as a single 049 model on glow fuel...!

A lot of laws and restrictions involving RC flying come about AFTER the infraction..! In other words the modeller creates the problem, and the result is that he is handed the restriction.

If it seems like a dumb place to fly...it probably is..!

There are public areas in other cities that restrict any RC Flying.

In my opinion, the best guidelines to follow are the ones published by MAAC, even if you are not a member and you only fly by yourself. Here are two worth reading:

http://www.maac.ca/docs/2010/maac_safety_guidelines_v009_jul_09_english.pdf

http://www.maac.ca/docs/2011/the_maac_safety_code__rev_jn2010.pdf

As Bill said, many cities have banned R/C aircraft in public parks as a result of some incident or conflict or concerns about liability. Let's hope that doesn't happen in HRM, so fly safe!

While I am on the topic, anyone flying FPV or thinking about it should read the documents published by the MAAC FPV committee:

http://www.maac.ca/committees/maac_committee.php?cm=40

(click on "view committee documents" on that page)

Keep in mind that an incident involving a FPV piloted model might come under the scrutiny of Transport Canada and Industry Canada!
