New 2M European sailplane class (and also electric version)

Unread post by JohnOSullivan » Mon Oct 10, 2016 9:13 pm

Andrew Smith has just built one of the recently introduced European style 2 metre high start sailplanes. (Andreas -- most likely named for our Andrew)
Having started a review of the class, it is one that would serve as an ideal introduction to sailplanes for our group.
Looking at my Minifex 2 Metre from the late 80's It would seem that with a little modernization it would fit the bill ( mostly an update to one of the current airfoil sections and lightening of components).

John Fennell is planning on building one for electric and is scouting out potential power systems.
Like the Spectra it is in the 2 metre class but is less than 60% of the weight of the Spectra so would not need as powerful a motor.
I had totally forgotten the weights of my finished Minifex models, but Andrew pointed out that I had stated 21.5 ounces on my web site .

Plans are in the Outerzone collection
http://outerzone.co.uk/plan_details.asp?ID=5951

This was with 1.5 ounce servos and with a little redesign, I'm sure it can be built under 16 ounces (Maybe 18 ozs with electrics)
Power system should be in the 150-200 watt range (25 amp ESC) and I am currently working on a good power system. Once I have settled on a good electric system i'll post it.

I am going to build one for the High Start class and also with an electric fuselage. I'll provide plans free to anyone who wants to build one.

Now that I have my 3.2m Pulsar repaired and ready to go, I have been working on the Minifex upgrade. I have downloaded several of the European designs and will be blending the NEW MINIFEX with some of their more advanced construction techniques while keeping the design as simple as possible.

Big Brother of the Minifex from when I had black hair and big beard,
Hard to think that this was 30 years ago.

Referring to the European 2m sailplane class, it's called F3-RES:

Basic info for the class: https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthr ... ?t=2696827

Most of the planes are kits and the instructions for most are not in English, so google translate and some care are needed.

The one I have (the andREaS) came from: http://www.hyperflight.co.uk/products.a ... al+Soarers
Ordered on a Thursday, shipped on Friday evening and it was out for delivery the next Thursday am but I was a work when they tried, so I picked it up on Friday.

I bought the specified histart ( rubber and line) from Seta-Tech, it was $86cdn shipped. https://translate.google.com/translate? ... eferid%3D2 and https://translate.google.com/translate? ... eferid%3D2
You will need to supply an anchor and a chute or streamer.

I also have this one on order: https://translate.google.com/translate? ... eferid%3D2

Work is progressing on new 2metre sailplane and electric version.
My 1980's Minifex design required only minor planform changes and updated airfoil modifications. Fuselage was extended and tail component reductions to conform with state-of-the-art modern designs.
I have a pure sailplane and electric version under construction and John Fennell has an electric version under way.

hey all. here is a link to the current RC Soaring Digest. The first article is all about the new 2m glider class that John had designed the Mayfly for.
