Hey All,

We are tentatively scheduling a day of thermal soaring at the Sod Farm in Lantz for the Labour day weekend...Sat Sept 3, 2016 with Sun Sept 4 as the rain date.
It would be great to see some new faces come out to experience the fun and challenge of Thermal Soaring.

Please RSVP if you think you might be interested, even just to watch or see what's involved.

Directions to the field:

From Halifax on the 102 take Exit #8 (Elmsdale), turn right and head south on Elmsdale Rd/NS-214 E for 1.1 km.
At the lights turn left onto HWY # 2 (signs for Truro/Lantz).
After 4.4 km turn right onto Isenor Rd. Follow Isenor to the end, Caution as the road is gated at the end before it enters the sod fields.

Here is a write up about last year's event: viewtopic.php?f=26&t=4021

We plan on having a variety of sailplanes on hand:

electric motor eg Pulsar, Radian
Hi-start/electric winch (string launch) eg. Elio, Victory

We may run a small competition if there is any interest.

Please note this is a SAILPLANE/FREE FLIGHT ONLY event.

Andrew

I'm wondering if elastic-band-windup planes count as sail planes? :D

This is another chance to see yet another side of model flying.
Flat land Thermal soaring uses Electric winch or Rubber High-Starts to launch the gliders to approximately 450 feet and begin thermal searching from there. We will also be flying the electric powered sailplanes (commonly used at Shannon Park). Walter Hacker from Tatamagouche has ssome state ot the art moulded sailplanes (>$2,000) which are worth seeing in action.
In addition we will be flying Free Flight Electric powered, Rubber powered and Gliders. These are non-radio controlled and require chasing on foot to retrieve.

The field in Lantz is nearly a mile long and 400m wide.
Take the opportunity to broaden your model flying experience.

I'll echo what Andrew and John have said about this facet of the hobby. I plan to attend this year with my KA-8 sloper that has this nice little "hook" on it's belly...made to attach a hi-start rubber too..!

The Club owns a Radian trainer as well, so I encourage members to pack a lunch with water and come out to the magnificent surroundings of grass as far as the eye can see; and get the feel of soaring with the birds...!

I'll probably leave from McDonalds in Bedford around 8am....if anyone wants to meet there.

(And then a week later join us for a float fly at Lake Echo.....but more on that in another thread.)

Hey..! What a hobby this one is...!
